A clean sweep with Aisle-Masters at PJH

Date: 29/08/2007

The UK’s leading bathroom and kitchen supplier the PJH Group has chosen a fleet of 5 articulated Aisle-Master forklifts to handle the ever growing amount of goods passing through its recently opened Enfield distribution centre.

The articulated design of the Aisle-Master enables it to be used as a replacement for a combination of counter balance forklifts and reach trucks, and it can work in much narrower confines than either of the other forklifts. These space saving and cost effective qualities made the Aisle-Master a very attractive proposition, as Warehouse Manager Gary Percival explains:  “Growth has been phenomenal (20% up on last year already) and we needed a handling system based around a forklift that will allow us to make the best possible use of our storage capacity now and in the future.

Three gas powered Aisle-Masters and two electric models were supplied by PJH’s materials handling specialists Rushlift to coincide with the opening of the new 100,000ft² site at the beginning of the year. The Enfield depot deals primarily with porcelain bathroom fittings destined for major names such as B&Q, Travis Perkins and Persimmon. The Aisle-Masters are fitted with cushion tyres and are specifically designed to work both outside as well as in the warehouse, enabling them to be used for offloading incoming deliveries if required. All the individual elements of suites such as baths, basins, and pedestals arrive boxed, are unpacked, checked and palletised. The Aisle-Masters manoeuvre the pallets into the racked storage area and repack them for eventual delivery to the end customer. This versatility has also been of major benefit according to Gary.

PJH’s rapid expansion means that in spite of the new premises, space is at a premium. “The bottom line is that we need all the space we can get, plus the ability to work round narrow racking and stack to a height of 6.6m. We get all this with the Aisle-Masters, plus the excellent build quality and reliability we have come to expect from these clever forklifts,”  says Gary.

The Aisle-Master range is designed and built at the company’s dedicated manufacturing facility in Ireland. The trucks can work in aisles of just 1.75m, with capacities to 2 tonnes and lift heights of up to 11.5 metres. Excellent visibility from the cab, a high quality suspension seat, adjustable steering column and lack of rear end swing when manoeuvering all contribute to a comfortable and safe operating environment. Electric and LPG power is available - all LPG models are fitted with 3-way catalytic converters as standard, with CNG power also an option. Rushlift will happily arrange a site visit so that its  warehouse design engineers can come up with layout proposals on how to maximise the use of available storage space.
