TYPES OF FORKLIFT TYRES AND THEIR USE

February 07, 2025

Forklift tyres are an important component of a forklift’s operation, they can influence its manoeuvrability, stability, and load capacity.  There are a range of tyres available for your forklift, depending on what the forklift is used for and where the forklift is used.

Pneumatic Forklift Tyres

Pneumatic tyres are similar to the tyres on a standard vehicle, filled with air to provide a cushion of support. These tyres are commonly used on forklifts that operate outdoors or in environments with rough terrain. The air-filled structure allows them to absorb shock and reduce the impact of uneven surfaces, making them ideal for outdoor environments like construction sites, lumber yards or gravel pits.
There are two types of pneumatic tyres:
  • Solid Pneumatic Tyres: These are made from solid rubber, providing the same benefits as air-filled tyres but without the risk of punctures. They are often used in heavy-duty operations where durability is critical.
  • Air Pneumatic Tyres: These are traditional tyres filled with air and provide a soft ride, making them suitable for handling rough, uneven terrain.

Solid Forklift Tyres

Solid forklift tyres are made from solid rubber, offering a durable and puncture-resistant solution for indoor applications. Unlike pneumatic tyres, solid tyres are not filled with air, which means they can withstand the toughest environments without worrying about flats or punctures. Solid tyres are ideal for environments where forklifts need to operate on smooth, hard surfaces like concrete floors.
There are two types of solid forklift tyres:
  • Non-marking solid tyres: These are made from rubber compounds and do not leave black marks on the floor. They are ideal for industries such as food processing or pharmaceuticals, where cleanliness if critical.
  • Standard solid tyres: These are the most common and are used in environments where marking floors isn’t a concern.

Cushion Forklift Tyres

Cushion tyres are a specific type of solid tyre that is made of softer rubber than standard solid tyres. These tyres are designed for indoor use on smooth surfaces, such as concrete floors. They are typically used on forklifts that handle lighter loads and operate in environments with limited outdoor exposure. Cushion tyres are often found on smaller forklifts that work in tight spaces, such as warehouses, grocery stores, or distribution centres. They offer excellent manoeuvrability and a smooth ride on flat, hard surfaces.

Polyurethane Forklift Tyres

Polyurethane tyres are made from a type of synthetic rubber that offers high durability and is resistant to wear and tear. These tyres are often used in specialised forklift applications, such as in warehouses with delicate or precision equipment. Polyurethane tyres are commonly used for forklifts that handle light loads and work on smooth, clean floors.

These tyres offer excellent traction and are less prone to marking the floors compared to solid rubber tyres. They are also known for their resistance to oils, chemicals, and other substances that could cause damage to regular rubber tyres.

Foam-filled Forklift Tyres

Foam-filled tyres are a hybrid between solid and pneumatic tyres. These tyres are made by filling a pneumatic tyre with foam, offering benefits of a solid tyre with the shock-absorbing capabilities of an air-filled tyre. They are ideal for warehouses and outdoor applications where punctures are a concern, but some shock absorption is still needed.

These tyres are especially useful in environments where forklifts handle a mix of indoor and outdoor operations, such as distribution centres that have both smooth floors and rough yard areas.

Polyurethane Cushion Tyres

Polyurethane cushion tyres are typically used in environments where cleanliness and precision are essential. These tyres are made from a special type of polyurethane rubber that provides excellent durability, a smooth ride, and reduce noise levels. They are ideal for forklifts that operate in food processing, pharmaceutical, or other clean-room environments.

These tyres are also resistant to oils, chemicals and other substances, making them a good option for environments where forklifts might encounter these materials.

How To Choose The Correct forklift Tyres

Choosing the right forklift tyre depends on several factors, including the type of environment in which the forklift operates, the weight of the loads being handled, and the floor conditions.
  • Indoor vs. Outdoor Use: If your forklift operates mostly indoors on smooth floors, cushion or polyurethane tyres may be ideal.  For outdoor operations on rough terrain, pneumatic or foam-filled tyres are better suited.
  • Load Capacity: Heavier loads may require solid pneumatic tyres or foam-filled tyres for added durability and support.
  • Terrain: If your warehouse has uneven or rough terrain, pneumatic tyres provide the best shock absorption and stability.
  • Floor Protection: For environments that require minimal marking or floor damage, non-marking solid tyres or polyurethane tyres are a good choice.

The right tyre type can enhance productivity, reduce downtime, and improve operator comfort. Whether you need durable outdoor tyres, puncture-resistant options, or smooth indoor tyres, understanding the different types of forklift tyres and their uses is key to selecting the best one for your needs.  By considering factors like terrain, load capacity and operating environment, you can make an informed decision that ensures your forklifts run smoothly and efficiently.
