WHAT REGULAR SERVICING DOES MY FORKLIFT NEED?

May 30, 2025

At Rushlift, we understand that forklifts are the backbone of any busy warehouse, logistics hub or manufacturing facility. They’re relied upon every day to keep materials moving, deadlines met and operations running efficiently. But to maintain this level of performance and safety, regular servicing is non-negotiable.

Whether you manage a single truck or operate a large fleet, sticking to a consistent servicing and maintenance schedule helps reduce downtime, ensures compliance with UK safety regulations and extends the life of your equipment.

The first line of defence are daily checks. Before every shift begins, operators should carry out a series of daily checks. These routine inspections are quick to performs by play an important role in catching potential issues early. The tyre condition should be examined for obvious signs of damage or excessive wear and make sure tyre pressure is within the correct range.  The forks and mast should also be inspected for visible cracks, warping or damage that could compromise lifting safety.

Hydraulic hoses should be checked for any signs of leaks or weakness and fluid levels must be topped up if necessary. The operator should ensure that all warning lights, gauges and control panels are functioning properly. Brakes and steering must feel responsive and the horn, lights and reversing alarm should be fully operational. Finally, confirm that the seatbelt is in good condition and working correctly. These checks may seem minor, but they can prevent breakdowns and, more importantly, accidents.

On a weekly or monthly basis, depending on usage intensity, forklifts require a more thorough inspection beyond the daily checks.  For electric forklifts, this include carefully examining the battery. Make sure electrolyte levels are correct, the terminals are clean and free from corrosion, and the battery is properly secured in its compartment. Cleanliness is especially important to prevent electrical faults.

For LPG or diesel models, engine checks become essential. Oil levels should be reviewed and topped up as required and the condition of the oil should be monitored to ensure it hasn’t degraded. Coolant levels must also be checked to avoid overheating and drive belts should be inspected for signs of fraying or slackness. The fuel system should be examined for leaks or blockages.

Lubrications is another key aspect of monthly maintenance. Lift chains, pivot points and moving components all need to be greased to keep them running smoothly and to prevent premature wear. Tyres should be assessed not only for tread depth but also for signs of uneven wear, which might indicate alignment or suspension issues that need addressing.

In addition to routine servicing, forklifts must undergo a formal Thorough Examination under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). This legal requirement applies to all lifting equipment in the UK and ensure that the machinery is safe to use. Rushlift provide LOLER inspections as part of our servicing packages. These inspections are carried out by certified engineers and include a full assessment of the lifting mechanisms, structural integrity and safety systems.

An annual service is the forklift equivalent of a full MOT and should be scheduled regardless of whether any faults are obvious. This comprehensive service includes a complete mechanical inspection where every component is tested for function and condition. For internal combustion models, engine performance is assessed and components like spark plugs, injectors and filters may be cleaned and replaced. They hydraulic system undergoes pressure testing to check for internal leaks or inefficiencies. In electric models, electronic diagnostics are run to identify any error codes or software issues.
