WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY FORKLIFT TYRES?

September 11, 2024

Forklift tyres play an important role in ensuring the safety, efficiency, and performance of your operations. Worn or damaged tyres can lead to accidents, equipment damage, and increased operating costs.

Knowing when to replace your forklift tyres is essential to maintaining a safe and productive work environment. Here’s what you need to know about recognising the signs that it’s time for new forklift tyres.

Signs of Tyre Wear and Damage

Regular inspection of your forklift tyres is crucial for spotting wear and tear. There are a number of indicators that you should look out for.

Reduced Tread Depth:

Over time, the tread on your forklift tyres will wear down, reducing traction and increasing the risk of slipping, especially on wet or uneven surfaces. Check the tread depth regularly; if it’s below the manufacturer’s recommended limit, it’s time for new tyres.

Chunking:

This occurs when pieces of the tyre tread start breaking off, creating uneven surfaces, and reducing stability. Chunking is often caused by rough surfaces, sharp turns, or carrying heavy loads. Tyres showing signs of chunking should be replaced immediately.

Tyre Splitting or Cracking:

Look for any splits, cracks, or deep cuts on the tyre’s surface. These can be caused by age, excessive use, or exposure to harsh environments. Splits and cracks weaken the tyre structure and can lead to blowouts, so it’s important to replace affected tyres promptly.

Flat Spots:

Flat spots can develop on tyres if the forklift has been parked for an extended period without moving or if the tyres lock up during braking. These spots cause uneven wear and vibration during operation, leading to uncomfortable rides and increased strain on the forklift.

Cushion Tyre Wear Line:

Cushion tyres, commonly used on indoor forklifts, have a wear line moulded into the sidewall. When the rubber wears down to this line, it indicates that the tyre has reached its maximum wear limit and should be replaced.

Bald Spots:

Bald spots are areas where the tyre tread has worn down completely, exposing the tyre’s smooth surface. These spots can lead to reduced traction, making it difficult to control the forklift, especially on slick or uneven surfaces.

Performance Issues that Indicate Tyre Damage

Even if the tyres don’t show obvious signs of wear, certain performance issues may indicate it’s time for a replacement.

Increased Vibration:

Excessive vibration during operation can be a sign of uneven tyre wear or structural damage. This not only affects the comfort of the operator but can also cause damage to the forklift and the load being carried.

Difficulty Steering:

If your forklift becomes harder to steer or doesn’t respond as expected, worn tyres could be the cause. Properly inflated and maintained tyres are essential for smooth and precise handling.

Lowered Load Capacity:

Worn tyres can affect the forklift’s ability to carry its maximum load safely. If you notice that the forklift is struggling with loads it previously handled with ease, it may be due to compromised tyre integrity.
